12.10.2020

Issues concerning the development of hydrogen technology and economy were the main topics covered during the presentation of the Government Plenipotentiary for RES Ireneusz Zyska during the 5th Scientific Conference "Energy Security - Pillars and Perspectives for Development". The event, which was organised by the Institute of Energy Policy and I. Łukasiewicz University of Technology in Rzeszów, took place on 12 October 2020.

The Polish energy sector is facing major changes. We attach an ever-increasing importance to the rational and sustainable use of energy resources and raw materials, and the climate policy pursued by the European Union assumes increasing the capacity of renewable energy sources, said Vice-Minister Ireneusz Zyska starting his speech.

As he pointed out, hydrogen is an energy medium used in many industries, and its potential should be exploited for a safe and greener industry, transport and energy.

The main advantage of hydrogen concerns its insignificant carbon footprint and emissions – that is why modern hydrogen technologies should play an important role in the process of decarbonisation, said the Government Plenipotentiary for RES.

Vice-Minister Ireneusz Zyska also pointed out that the Ministry of Climate and Environment supports the development of hydrogen technologies in Poland with the creation of the Hydrogen Strategy, which will be presented for public consultation this autumn.

It is our intention that, after consultations and environmental impact assessment, the full document should be adopted by the Council of Ministers in the upcoming spring. The aim of the draft strategy is to support the construction of a value chain of low-carbon hydrogen technologies, which – according to the plans – will comprise three 3 pillars, namely new hydrogen production installations using electrolysis, using energy from RES installations, efficient transportation and distribution of hydrogen and support for innovative use of hydrogen in energy, transport and industry sectors, said Vice-Minister Zyska.

During the conference, Vice-Minister Zyska received, on behalf of the Minister of Climate and Environment, Michał Kurtyka, the prestigious I. Łukasiewicz Award in the energy security category, for his role as the President of the COP24 Climate Conference.
