Carpathians Unite - conservation of Orawsko-Nowotarskie Peatbogs

The Minister of Climate and the Environment, with the support of the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management, as the Operator of the Environment, Energy and Climate Change Program, informs about the conclusion of a contract for co-financing the project “Carpathians Unite - conservation of Orawsko-Nowotarskie Peatbogs”.

The project beneficiary is The UNEP/GRID-Warsaw Centre.

About the project

The project received funding in the call for proposals for Implementation of ecosystem management plans under the Environment, Energy and Climate Change Programme, in the area of Environmental status of ecosystems improved.

The total cost is approximately EUR 1.1 million (PLN 5 million) and the requested amount of funding is approximately EUR 1 million (PLN 4.3 million).

It is co-financed in 85% by the Environment, Energy and Climate Change Program of the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism (of which 85% comes from the EEA Financial Mechanism and 15% from the national budget). 

The implementation of the project aims to protect wetland ecosystems through active habitat protection measures in the "Bór na Czerwonem" reserve (construction of dams and levees, pine cutting, measures to prevent anthropopressure), natural monitoring of abiotic and biotic parameters of the bog with the use of modern technologies, support for management activities in communes where the Orawsko-Nowotarski bog complex is located, and dissemination of the project results among the Carpathian countries.

Educational activities aimed at schoolchildren and adults on the role and protection of wetlands are also envisaged.

Partnership

The project is conducted with the Norwegian partner Norway's Asplan Viak AS and polish Nature and Man Foundation (Fundacja Przyroda i Człowiek).

Implementation period

The agreement for the project's co-financing was signed on 23rd November 2021 and the planned completion date is April 30, 2024.
