Deputy Minister Guibourgé-Czetwertyński: Zero-carbon strategies will help to combat the economic downturn

05.11.2020

"I am convinced that, in the face of the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the implementation of low and zero-carbon strategies in the energy sector is an opportunity for the much anticipated new impetus to economic development" - said the Deputy Minister of Climate and Environment Adam Guibourgé-Czetwertyński, during today's webinar "Climate Neutrality - V4 Perspective" devoted to the perspective of achieving climate neutrality by Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Sweden. The meeting has been organised by the Polish embassy in Stockholm as part of the Polish Presidency of the Visegrad Group (V4).

The main goal of the webinar was to answer the question of how to deal with the energy transformation in the face of the economic slowdown, in view of the climate targets announced by the EU.

According to the Deputy Minister Adam Guibourgé-Czetwertyński, it is the Visegrad Group countries that will be most heavily burdened with the achievement of emission targets, due to the significant share of fossil fuels in their energy mix.

As part of Poland's energy and climate transformation, in the context of EU climate policy, the Ministry of Climate and Environment pays particular attention to the social aspect. Therefore, we want to counteract the phenomenon of growing energy poverty due to energy prices. We will do everything we can to ensure that the voice of the V4 countries will be heard at the next European Council meeting in December this year - he pointed out.

The Deputy Minister of Climate and Environment also stressed that Poland has successfully launched the implementation of the strategy for transforming the economy into a new, zero-carbon emission system.

At the beginning of September this year the Minister of Climate and Environment Michał Kurtyka presented an updated project named "Energy Policy of Poland until 2040 (EPP2040).

This document is the Polish answer to the challenges we have to deal with together when facing climate change" - he said.

The Polish strategy is based on three pillars: a just transition, a zero-carbon energy system, and good air quality.

Energy from offshore wind farms, nuclear energy and increasing role of prosumer energy while ensuring energy security are our priorities. We plan that by 2030, 1/3 of electricity will come from renewable energy sources.

The Deputy Minister Guibourgé-Czetwertyński also pointed out that Poland is the third largest producer of hydrogen in Europe and the fifth largest in the world.
