First day of the TOGETAIR Climate Summit

22.04.2021

The issues of energy transformation and carbon border tax are the main topics of the first day of the 2nd TOGETAIR Climate Summit. The event, which took place on 21 April 2021, was attended by Minister of Climate and Environment, Michał Kurtyka, and Deputy Minister, Adam Guibourgé-Czetwertyński.

Minister klimatu i środowiska Michał Kurtyka

“The future begins today. Energy Policy of Poland until 2040”

The debate “The future begins today. Energy Policy of Poland until 2040" was attended by Michał Kurtyka, head of the Ministry of Climate and Environment. During the meeting, Minister Kurtyka reminded that in February, Polish government adopted Energy Policy of Poland until 2040.

Energy Policy of Poland until 2040 provides a framework within which we would like to build energy capacities in our country and shows the strategic investments. Our energy assets, most of which date back to 1960s and 1970s, are ageing. That is why energy transformation is crucial to preserving energy security and the continuity of energy supply-

he stressed.

As Minister Kurtyka pointed out, the energy and climate transformations are also an opportunity for Poland to develop its economic environment.

We want the energy transformation to be carried out in a just and sustainable way, so to protect regions dependant on fossil fuels. In the Energy Policy of Poland until 2040, we are indicating directions of development which will allow the establishment of 300,000 new, highly paid jobs -

he said.

Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) at EU borders

Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) at EU borders” is another debate held within the TOGETAIR Climate Summit and attended by Deputy Minister Adam Guibourgé-Czetwertyński.

As the deputy minister pointed out, CBAM is a method of promoting climate ambition and preventing imports of products which result in significant emissions abroad.

We want to develop the carbon adjustment mechanism, known as CBAM, to avoid carbon leakage to other countries. The goal here is to make the non-EU countries switch to production that would be more environmentally friendly. Within the European Union, this function is carried out by the EU ETS system,

he said.

As the deputy minister added, the introduction of CBAM would ensure a level playing field for EU industry and importers.
