Prospects for the development of nuclear energy in Europe, in the context of the Green Deal, is the main topic of the session during the conference “High Temperature Reactors for deep decarbonisation: the Polish example From the Gemini+ research project towards demonstration”. The event, which took place on 25 November 2020, was attended by Michał Kurtyka, Minister of Climate and Environment.

Minister Kurtyka on the prospects for the development of nuclear energy

During the videoconference, the head of the ministry of climate and environment emphasised that the European Green Deal is a very ambitious strategy.

The European Green Deal is starting a transition that will affect many sectors of our economy. The energy sector plays a particularly important role in the fight against climate change. Nuclear energy should be considered a major player alongside other low-carbon technologies, he said.

Minister also pointed out that the Polish government started updating two important documents this year – Energy Policy of Poland until 2040 and the update of the Polish Nuclear Energy Program, which was adopted by the Council of Ministers in October this year.

According to the update of the Polish Nuclear Energy Program, 6 nuclear energy units with a capacity of 6-9 GWe of will be operating by 2043. The first nuclear reactor with a capacity of approx. 1–1.5 GWe will be launched by 2033, and the next five every two years until 2043. In addition, the Polish Nuclear Energy Program assumes the use of proven and large-scale reactors; in the long term it is possible to include new technologies - currently unavailable on the market, he said.

Minister Kurtyka also emphasised that the development of carbon-free nuclear energy will not only contribute to the emergence of a new industry in Poland with a high degree of technological advancement, but above all will allow for further diversification of energy sources, a significant reduction in emissions and the stable operation of the power system integrating renewable energy on a mass scale.
