Minister Paulina Hennig-Kloska at the EU Energy Council meeting

04.03.2024

The main issues addressed at the EU Energy Council meeting held on 4 March 2024 in Brussels included energy security, gas regulations and the flexibility of the power grid. Mrs. Paulina Hennig-Kloska, Minister of Climate and Energy, took part in the event.

Minister Paulina Hennig-Kloska na Radzie UE ds. Energii

and Energy, stressed that the Government ensured Poland’s energy security.

There is no doubt that the greatest crisis is behind us, but cooperation, good monitoring of prices on the European market and the filling of storage facilities before the next season are the directions which Poland will support

- she said.

Just as every year, our priority will be the filling of storage facilities before the next  winter season. In turn, as regards crude oil, the replenishment in 2024 of the fuel reserves which were reduced in 2023 will send a positive signal on their safeguarding in the winter season at the turn of the year

- Minister Paulina Hennig-Kloska added.

The Minister also pointed out that the imposition of an embargo on crude oil and fuels from Russia in the 6th sanction package and its later expansion to include LPG in Poland greatly enhanced the importance of sea terminals, thus making it necessary to ensure their efficient operation – in terms of the physical aspect and the cyber threats. Here, we see an area for major coordination of actions at EU level.

Minister Paulina Hennig-Kloska also called on the European Commission to analyse how during the nearest winter fuels will be delivered to Ukraine and how the imposition of an embargo on LPG can affect the capacity of the EU Member States and the ensuring of the sales of the required fuel volumes to this country.

In the context of the Council recommendations for the reduction of natural gas consumption, Poland holds the position that the Member States are responsible for actions in this area. The recommendations proposed by the Commission can provide good guidance on how this can be done effectively. However, Poland sees no obstacles to the adoption of these recommendations.

During its meeting the Council also discussed the issue of the flexibility of the power grid where renewable energy sources play an increasingly large role.

This is a large challenge which is faced by all the Member States. However, flexibility is not an end in itself, as it should serve to ensure sustainable and cost-effective energy transition

- the Minister said.

In the course of the discussion on the situation in Ukraine, Minister Paulina Hennig-Kloska pointed out that since the beginning of the conflict Poland had supported and intended to continue to support Ukraine, including in the area of energy.

We are aware that Russia continues its attacks on the Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Over the last two months, we have seen that these attacks have intensified and have had a much more massive character than in the past

- she noted.

The Minister of Climate and Environment also met with Mr. Virginijus Sinkevičius, the EU Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries and Mr. Bruno Le Maire, the French Minister for Economy, Finance and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty.
