Successful Polish-Japanese cooperation

21.04.2021

A demonstration project involving the implementation and testing of the Special Protection Scheme (SPS) system by PSE SA and the BESS battery energy storage system, installed at the Bystra wind farm owned by Energa OZE, part of the ORLEN Group, was completed. The project, co-financed by the Japanese government agency New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), was supported by the Ministry of Climate and Environment.

Nature protection

I am convinced that this project will contribute to the further integration of renewable energy in Poland – safe for the energy system – by ensuring stable operation of the electricity grid and, at the same time, minimising investment in transmission infrastructure -

said head of the ministry, Michał Kurtyka.

SPS system

Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne is one of the first companies in Europe to implement the smart grid system. The SPS system, combined with the BESS energy storage, can significantly improve the management of the national electricity system and contribute to the development of RES. The system covers the northern part of Poland and increases the safety of the national electricity system. The functionality of SPS and BESS energy storage includes the elimination of congestion in the high-voltage transmission and distribution network, capacity reserve, as well as price arbitrage.

The biggest energy storage in Poland

BESS 6 MW hybrid energy storage, with a capacity of 27.3 MWh located at the Bystra wind farm in northern Poland, is now Poland’s largest and most advanced electrochemical energy storage. It uses the lithium-ion batteries (LiB) with high output power, combined with high-capacity lead-acid batteries (LAB), enabling high efficiency while optimising costs.

The storage was established in 2020. The next phase of the project was focused on tests conducted by PSE SA and ENERGA OZE SA verifying the functionality of BESS storage and on the cooperation of the storage with the wind farm.

Polish-Japanese agreement

The project was carried out with the involvement of the Japanese government organisation NEDO and partners: Hitachi Ltd., Showa Denko Materials Co. Ltd. On the Polish side, the design works were carried out by Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne S.A. (PSE), Energa Operator SA (EOP) and Energa OZE SA (EOZE).

The project was also supported by the Polish government from the very beginning, following the agreement signed in March 2017 between the then Ministry of Energy and the Japanese government agency NEDO. In 2020, the provisions of the document, signed on the Polish side by the Ministry of Climate (now Ministry of Climate and Environment), were extended and updated.
