A GOCC heart in space
30.12.2024
The Gold Heart – symbol of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity – will take a journey to space. It is to be carried there by Sławosz Uznański - a Polish astronaut who will travel to the International Space Station next year. On 30 December, in presence of the Minister of Economic Development and Technology Krzysztof Paszyk, Jurek Owsiak officially gave the heart over to make it find its way to space.
This combines the space mission with a social one. Travel of the heart numbered “1” to space will form a wonderful link of development and science with the reason of heart and helping other people. I am delighted that we – as the Ministry of Economic Development and Technology – may contribute to bringing these two realities together
- said the Minister of Economic Development and Technology Krzysztof Paszyk.
From the perspective of space, we are a civilization living on a cosmic rock. Space travel allows us to re-evaluate the priorities of life: love, solidarity, community, helping others. For me personally, GOCC is a longstanding reminder to us, Poles, of what is truly significant. I am moved by the fact that GOCC trusted me to carry the Gold Heart into space, in my hand luggage, during the Polish IGNIS mission
– stressed Sławosz Uznański, Project Astronaut of the European Space Agency.
The word “cosmic” has been used a lot in context of the Orchestra, since it is truly out of space to play for so many years and be so successful. It is also cosmic to witness such an incredible participation of Poles in the project, but thanks to Sławosz, we are going to face a literally cosmic experience this time! The Orchestra, encapsulated in the 4.5-gramme Gold Heart No. 1, was permitted to take a journey to real space. It is an incredible and fantastic achievement, preceded by a truly cosmic auction for the bidders
- stated Jurek Owsiak, the chairman of the board of the GOCC Foundation.
During the upcoming 33rd Grand Finale of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity to be held on 26 January 2025, a unique item will be presented for auction. This time, the battle for the GOCC's Gold Heart will become cosmic. The winner of the Most Generous Benefactors Auction will receive his/her trophy in a few months, after the Heart will take an extraordinary journey to the International Space Station (ISS) with Doctor Sławosz Uznański.
The first Polish mission to the International Space Station named “IGNIS” is scheduled for the first half of the upcoming year. The commitment of the Polish companies and scientific institutions will allow for conducting the experiments affecting development of among others medicine, biology, engineering and space technologies. As the Polish astronaut returns to Earth, the Gold Heart will be handed over to the winner of the GOCC Grand Finale auction.
The 33rd GOCC Grand Finale is dedicated to children’s haematology and oncology.
