Minister of Finance and Economy Andrzej Domański met with Vice-Chancellor and Minister of Finance of the Federal Republic of Germany Lars Klingbeil in Warsaw on 2 February 2026. The talks focused on key bilateral issues and the challenges facing the European economy.
During the meeting, the ministers discussed key areas of economic cooperation, including trade and investment. They also discussed the need for more effective spending on security, the development of the European defence industry, directions for reform of the EU capital market and deregulation. They referred to discussions within the E6 format, bringing together the EU’s largest economies, which are intended to significantly accelerate work on the EU agenda.
Minister Andrzej Domański highlighted the dynamic development of economic relations between Poland and Germany:
Our economic relations are on an upward trajectory. In the first 11 months of 2025 alone, the value of trade reached nearly EUR 160 billion. Poland is Germany’s fourth-largest export market – we have even overtaken China in this respect.
On the subject of defence financing, Minister Domański referred to the importance of the SAFE programme for the Polish defence sector, while stressing that further action in this area and additional, including new, initiatives are needed. Referring to the economic challenges facing the European Union, the Minister pointed to the need to accelerate pro-growth measures:
We need to accelerate and improve the competitiveness of the European economy.
He also stressed the importance of simplifying regulations and making full use of the potential of the single market:
We need to loosen the regulatory straitjacket, simplify legislation and reform markets, and fully harness the strength of the common European market of nearly 500 million consumers.
Minister Domański noted that Poland and Germany have a particular role to play in shaping growth in Europe:
Together, we are taking responsibility for economic growth in Europe.
Vice-Chancellor Lars Klingbeil stressed the importance of further deepening European integration:
The year 2026 will be decisive for our integration efforts within Europe. We expect the European Commission to support us in these efforts.
He also pointed to the need to make the European Union more attractive to investors:
We need to make Europe a more attractive place to invest. We want to harness the potential of the entire continent. It is clear to us that we need to spend money on defence more effectively so that funds are used more efficiently in Europe.
The ministers also discussed the reform of the Savings and Investments Union, highlighting the shared objective of increasing the availability of capital in Europe and strengthening investment mechanisms that support growth.
During the talks, the Polish side encouraged support for Poland’s bid to host the future European Union Customs Authority (EUCA), highlighting Poland’s infrastructure readiness and strategic importance.
