Registered unemployment and job offers in August 2020 - a commentary of the Ministry of Economic Development to the data issued by the Central Statistical Office

23.09.2020

Data, Analysis, Comment

The number of unemployed registered at labour offices has decreased, the unemployment rate has become stable and the number of job offers at the end of the month continues to increase. That is the core message of the most recent data published by the Central Statistical Office.

According to the Central Statistical Office, at the end of August this year, 1 million 28 thousand unemployed were registered with labour offices. That is 1.5 thousand less in comparison to July. The decrease in the number of unemployed, however quite low, is the first decrease noted since March this year. The number of unemployed still remains at a significantly lower level in comparison to the same month in 2019 - the difference is 162 thousand. The unemployment rate remains stable at 6.1% - and remains at this level since June of the current year. The number of job offers by the end of the month amounted to 73.3 thousand (900 more in comparison to July). That is the fifth month in a row when the number of job offers continues to increase, however it becomes less dynamic.

The aforementioned data prove that the situation in the job market becomes stable. The improvement of the situation in the majority of industries has been ongoing since May and translated to the possibility of maintaining jobs as well as the gradual increase in the number of job offers. The summer period also works in favour of the number of job offers, as it generates additional jobs in the economy. However, the gradual recovery, as well as the difficulties of certain sectors, do not allow for a strong rebound of the labour market and the return to the situation prior to the pandemic.
