Second consecutive record-breaking PMI index recorded for the Polish Industry – a commentary by Deputy Minister Robert Tomanek

01.07.2021

In June, the PMI came in at 59.4 and remains above the 50-point threshold for the twelfth consecutive month, indicating continued growth in the manufacturing sector. New orders, employment and stock creation are the main components with the greatest impact on the result.

Data, Analysis, Comment

Again, all of the five sub-indices have positively contributed to the main index. The level of new orders increased for the seventh consecutive month and at the fastest pace since February 2014 (the third historically highest reading). June sales were mainly based on the domestic market, but foreign contracts have also increased considerably.

Stronger demand brought an increase in production, which increased for the fifth consecutive month at the fastest expansion rate since January 2017. For that reason, production backlogs increased again (for the ninth consecutive month). In June they were the largest in the history of the survey (since 2003). As backlogs increased, finished goods inventories depleted (at the fastest rate since October 2017).

Industrial employment levels increased for the tenth consecutive month at the fastest pace since April 2017. Manufacturers wanted to increase production capacity by filling staff shortages and hiring additional employees.
Producers stockpiled means of production in fear of delay in deliveries. Stock levels increased at the fastest rate in the history of the survey. In contrast, the purchasing activity of the manufacturers was the highest since May 2004.
