100th anniversary of renewed diplomatic relations between Poland and the Holy See – presentation of the book

20.02.2020

“The developing cooperation between the Republic of Poland and the Holy See is based on common values, similar positions and ways of perceiving the problems of contemporary world. We stand up against the use of force to solve conflicts and changing borders contrary to the international law,” said Minister Jacek Czaputowicz during an official presentation of a volume summarising the history of diplomatic relations between Poland and the Holy See.

The book Poland and the Holly See. A history of bilateral ties on the 100th anniversary of renewed diplomatic relations was edited by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the occasion of resuming diplomatic relations in 1919. It is the first monograph in Poland that presents the activity of both Polish and Vatican diplomats throughout the centuries. The book also serves as a homage paid by the Polish diplomacy to John Paul II in the centenary of his birthday this year.

The publication prepared by professional historians and diplomats shows how diplomatic relations have developed between Poland and the Holy See since the time of Mieszko I. It sheds a light on how the monarch was represented at the papal court in the period of the greatest splendour of the Polish-Lithuanian state and describes the diplomatic relations between the Polish emigrants and the Papacy. “The diplomatic ties with the Holly See significantly influenced the position of our country in Europe and the world,” highlighted Minister Czaputowicz.

During the event, a panel discussion was also held on Polish-Vatican diplomatic relations throughout history.
