A Pole has been chosen as the Permanent Court of Arbitration’s new Secretary-General

14.02.2022

It is our pleasure to announce that Poland’s Ambassador to the Netherlands, Prof. Marcin Czepelak, has been elected to a five-year term as the new Secretary-General of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague.

Marcin Czepelak

He will be the first Secretary-General not of Dutch nationality to hold the post in the PCA’s 123-year history. Ambassador Czepelak was elected today (14 February 2022) in a secret ballot of the PCA’s Administrative Council, composed of diplomatic representatives of all 122 signatory states of the Hague conventions. He was chosen over candidates nominated by the Netherlands and Mauritius. We take this opportunity to congratulate the new Secretary-General and wish him success in fulfilling a very difficult and responsible mission.

The Permanent Court of Arbitration is the world’s oldest international tribunal, established by the Conventions for the Pacific Settlement of International Disputes, concluded at the Hague in 1899 and 1907, during the two Hague Peace Conferences. Its purpose is to facilitate arbitration and other forms of resolving disputes between states, private companies and international organizations. The Secretary-General directs the PCA’s International Office, which provides support for the Court, including legal and administrative assistance, during dispute resolution procedures.
