The ministers agreed that NATO’s and the EU’s strong and joint response will be a proper reply to claims made by Russia against Europe and the US. Minister Rau noted that the proper place to discuss European security is the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe, chaired by Poland since 1 January 2022.

The US Secretary of State assured that no decisions on the Central and Eastern Europe can be made without consultations with the countries of the region. The conversation, held on the initiative of the US side, allowed to arrange joint measures to ease the tense situation around Ukraine and along NATO’s eastern flank. This is yet another meeting of the group after the talks of the presidents of the Bucharest Nine with US President Joe Biden and the talks of the countries’ presidential security advisers in December 2021.

The Bucharest Nine (B9) was established on Poland’s and Romania’s initiative. It comprises countries on NATO eastern border – Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Romania Slovakia and Hungary.
