Minister Sikorski has held top-level meetings with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath. Radosław Sikorski pointed to Poland’s experience of transition as a possible role model. Also discussed were the possibilities for bilateral cooperation.

The visit agenda reflects the broad and close relationship between the European Union and Sri Lanka in many areas, such as trade and development, democracy, rule of law and human rights, environment and climate change, maritime security and safety, and multilateralism. The EU is a steadfast partner to Sri Lanka in its efforts for economic recovery.

During the visit, Foreign Minister Sikorski has also attended an informal dialogue hosted by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce with key stakeholders from the private and public sector. The EU single market is Sri Lanka’s second largest export destination with exports of EUR 2.7 billion in 2024. The meeting also discussed the Global Gateway, or the EU’s contribution to narrowing the global investment gap worldwide.

At an event organised by the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute, the minister shared Poland’s experience of economic transformation underpinned by shared values and partnership, including democracy, inclusivity and social protection.

At the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, Poland’s chief diplomat spoke about the EU Indo-Pacific Strategy and about maritime security and safety. Minister Sikorski also visited the French-supported Regional Centre for Maritime Studies, which is hosting training on ports’ safety with experts including from Poland. The new EU-funded project “Global Ports Safety” (GPS) is supported by the European Union and France.
