Democracy as a remedy for authoritarianism – 10th edition of Warsaw Dialogue for Democracy

06.10.2022

On 6 October 2022, Minister Zbigniew Rau opened the 10th edition of the Warsaw Dialogue for Democracy, devoted to the defence of democratic values against authoritarianism in the context of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

Warsaw Dialogue for Democracy

The Warsaw Dialogue for Democracy is a cyclical conference, organised since 2012 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with international and local organisations concerned with human rights and democracy, as well as the representatives of civil society and the academia. This year’s conference was organised by the Polish MFA in partnership with the Community of Democracies and the Polish Institute of International Affairs.

In his opening speech, Minister Zbigniew Rau emphasised that the Russian attack on Ukraine is directed against the democratic world.

“The brave people of Ukraine are fighting not only for their own security and freedom, but also for the values common to all democratic countries. Now is the time for the world’s democracies to stand in solidarity with Ukraine,” highlighted the minister.

The discussions were attended by diplomats, human rights defenders, including the representatives of the Memorial Society, civil society, as well as experts.

This year’s Warsaw Dialogue for Democracy was part of the Warsaw Human Dimension Conference, held on 26 September – 7 October 2022 by the Polish Chairmanship of the OSCE in cooperation with the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights.
