The deputy minister also recalled that Poland joined the calls of the international community to strengthen commitment to provide humanitarian aid to Iraqi people. In response to the calls, Poland supports and will support the missions of international humanitarian organisations in Iraq and bilateral operations on the ground.

During his visit to Baghdad, Deputy Minister Lang held political consultations with his local counterpart Mouayed Saleh at the Iraqi MFA. He also met with the Minister of Defence Najah Hassan Ali Al-Shammari and the Head of Prime Minister’s Cabinet Mohammad Al-Hashimi, and visited the Polish Military Contingent in Iraq.

Bilateral relations, current security issues in the Middle East and fighting terrorism were the main subjects of discussion. Deputy Minister Maciej Lang appreciated the effects of balanced regional policy implemented by Baghdad and attempted mediations to solve current tensions and conflicts. He also congratulated the representatives of central authorities on the victory over Daesh terrorists and stressed that Polish government continues to support the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Iraq. “Since 2016 Poland has been engaged in the operations of the Global Coalition against Daesh. We are ready to continue our support for Iraqi authorities in stabilising the country and reforming the security sector,” underlined Deputy Minister Lang.

On the sidelines of his visit in Baghdad, the Polish undersecretary also met with Alice Walpole, Deputy Special Representative of UN Secretary-General and deputy head of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI). The meeting participants discussed the situation in Iraq in the context of actions taken by the UN Security Council, which Poland will preside over in August.

The visit closed with Deputy Minister Maciej Lang’s visit to Erbil for talks with the President of the Kurdistan Regional Government of the Republic of Iraq Nechirvan Barzani, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, Speaker of the Parliament Rewaz Faiq and the head of foreign relations department of the Kurdistan Regional Government of the Republic of Iraq Safeen Dizayee.
