“All six countries seeking OECD membership are eligible to open accession negotiations, which is something Poland has repeatedly endorsed,” said the deputy chief of Polish diplomacy during the Ministerial Council Meeting of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

On 22 and 23 May in Paris, Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Przydacz took part in a session of the OECD Council at the ministerial level, representing Poland in some of the discussions on the OECD’s engagement with non-members and the Organisation’s governance. Further enlargement of OECD was also one of the meeting’s topics.

In his address, Deputy Minister Przydacz stressed that Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia are very good candidates and that as EU member states they are already in compliance with OECD standards in numerous areas. He assured OECD members that Poland will cooperate actively with the Organisation in bringing Eastern Europe and Southern Caucasus countries closer to OECD standards. On the initiative of Poland and Sweden, these countries for the past ten years have been covered by the OECD Eurasia Competitiveness Programme, a special cooperation programme.

On the occasion of the ministerial council, the deputy chief of Polish diplomacy held a meeting with Madina Zhunusbekova, Kazakhstan’s Vice Minister of National Economy. The discussion explored the possibilities of stepping up cooperation with the country within the OECD and bilaterally. “We hope that Kazakhstan’s institutions, business and NGOs will visit the Warsaw Humanitarian Expo on 11-13 June 2019,” said Deputy Minister Marcin Przydacz.

The OECD Council is the Organisation’s highest decision-making body. Ministers from the member countries come together for the ministerial council meeting only once in a year. Compared with other organisations, the OECD stands out as a leader in its analytical work and recommendations in the broad economic and social fields. Poland joined the OECD on 22 November 1996. The Organisation currently has 36 members.
