Deputy Minister Wojciech Zajączkowski visits Nigeria

Undersecretary of State Wojciech Zajączkowski met in Abuja with Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Dunoma Umar Ahmed and the representatives of other Nigerian ministries. They spoke about security as well as the political and economic cooperation.
The deputy chief of Polish diplomacy praised Nigeria’s engagement in stabilisation processes in Africa and other parts of the world. Deputy Foreign Minister Wojciech Zajączkowski highlighted the need to maintain global governance based on multilateralism, respect for international law, democracy, and human rights. This meeting reaffirmed that Poland and Nigeria have a shared view of respecting the principles of the UN Charter, especially sovereignty, the inviolability of borders, and the peaceful settlement of disputes. He stressed that close cooperation between Nigeria and Poland, much like cooperation with the EU, is in the interest of both sides. He also expressed his hope for a further bilateral cooperation dialogue.
Wojciech Zajączkowski also met with the representatives of other Nigerian ministries, such as: Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment Jumoke Oduwole; Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Wale Edun; Minister of Defence Mohammed Badaru Abubakar; and Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Bosun Tijani. During the meeting, the deputy minister praised Nigeria’s President and government for combating poverty and fighting terrorism. The participants also raised cybersecurity and countering disinformation. Also discussed was cooperation in areas such as IT, security, energy, transport, and finance.
The deputy minister also met with Nigerian academic and religious communities, international affairs analysts, and members of the Polish diaspora, including numerous employees of European institutions in Abuja and staff from the Polish Investment and Trade Agency’s Lagos office.
Deputy Minister Zajączkowski’s visit, a few days before the start of the European Union–African Union Summit, demonstrates Poland’s strengthened presence in Africa and highlights the importance of relations with Sub-Saharan Africa, a region of growing geopolitical significance. The purpose of the visit was also to develop business relations between Warsaw and Abuja, building on the success of this year’s Polish–Nigerian Economic Forum in Lagos.
