On the first day of his visit to New York for the opening of the 80th UN General Assembly Session, Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski took the floor at the emergency meeting of the UN Security Council called at Estonia's request.

In his address, Minister Radosław Sikorski said that the Council had convened for the second time in ten days in response to Russia’s provocative acts. In Poland’s case, its airspace had been violated by Russian drones. Russia’s provocation towards Estonia had consisted in three MiG-31 fighter jets illegally crossing its air border.

Poland’s top diplomat referred to what Vladimir Putin had said during his recent meeting with President Donald Trump in Anchorage, where the Russian dictator had declared readiness to “move from confrontation to dialogue”. “Unfortunately, we are witnessing the opposite, with Russian provocations escalating more and more,” said Foreign Minister Sikorski.

He observed that the escalation testifies to the weakness of the Russian regime. The Russian state is unable to bear the political, social, and economic consequences of the war against Ukraine it started three and a half years ago.

Minister Radosław Sikorski called on the Security Council to condemn Russia and to stand in solidarity with all the nations threatened by Kremlin’s provocations.

Addressing the representatives of Russia attending the meeting, Minister Sikorski reminded them that the states have an inherent right to self-defence and Poland will exercise that right in justified cases.
