“Today’s consultations confirmed the excellent state of our bilateral relations and cooperation in international fora. Estonia is one of Poland’s closest partners in both NATO and European Union and regional organisations,” said Minister Jacek Czaputowicz after a meeting in Warsaw with chief of Estonian diplomacy Urmas Reinsalu.

The ministers discussed security focusing on the challenges in the Baltic Sea region, the involvement of NATO forces on the Eastern flank of the Alliance, and the preparations for the NATO London summit. “We keep an open political and expert dialogue with Estonia, among others in the field of security. We recognise the need to prepare the Alliance and its members for new types of threats. Our cooperation also covers to a large extent cybersecurity issues,” said the chief of Polish diplomacy. Minister Jacek Czaputowicz emphasised Poland’s involvement in Baltic Air Policing, a mission of policing the Baltic States’ airspace, and the presence of Polish troops in Latvia as part of NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence.

The ministers also drew attention to the potential of developing the single market and Polish-Estonian economic cooperation. “We must ensure the competitiveness of European companies on the global market. We agree on the need to maintain substantial funding for sectoral policies and the common agricultural policy,” underlined the chief of Polish diplomacy.

Moreover, Minister Jacek Czaputowicz and Minister Urmas Reinsalu discussed the situation in the European Union in the context of the coming elections to the European Parliament. “We agreed that in the appointment process for top functions in the European Union persons should be selected who reflect the geographical diversity of the institutions,” said Minister Jacek Czaputowicz. One of the raised topics was also the adoption of the Warsaw Declaration by 13 countries, including Estonia and Poland, on 1 May. The Declaration outlined the position of Central European countries on the future of the European Union.

The talks were also devoted to Eastern issues, including relations with Russia and the situation in Ukraine after the swearing in of President Volodymyr Zelenski. Referring to the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Eastern Partnership, the ministers discussed the way forward for this initiative. Minister Jacek Czaputowicz pointed out that Poland supports the development and strengthening of the Eastern Partnership and the strengthening of cooperation between the EU and Eastern Partnership countries in three main areas: approximation of legislation, sectoral cooperation, and institutionalisation.
