Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski takes part in Foreign Affairs Council meeting

22.01.2024

Held in Brussels on 22 January 2024, the meeting focused on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East. Ukraine's future is within the European Union and December's FAC decision to start accession talks needs to be implemented as soon as possible—such are the meeting's main conclusions.

Minister Sikorski pointed out that Poland finds it necessary to secure appropriate funds for further military support for Ukraine and added that it is important to speed up the defence industry production throughout the European Union in required quantity and quality. "Poland backs the EU initiatives aimed at supporting Ukraine militarily, including the so-called ammunition initiative to provide 1 million rounds of 155-millimeter ammunition by March 2024," pledged the minister.

Poland's top diplomat stressed the importance of the European Peace Facility (EPF) and called for immediate resumption of works on the Ukraine Assistance Fund as part of the EPF. "We also must unlock the 8th tranche of the EPF to continue to benefit from the already planned support," said Minister Sikorski. The head of the MFA expressed a belief that Russia should bear the legal consequences of its actions and be held fully financially accountable for all damage and all Ukrainian material losses caused during the ongoing conflict. "We are satisfied that the topic of deploying the frozen Russian assets is on the European Union agenda during the Belgian presidency," added the minister. "The idea to deploy the profits generated by the frozen Russian Central Bank's assets is a step in the right direction, although we believe that all frozen Russian assets should be earmarked for Ukraine", highlighted Minister Sikorski. He also pointed out that it is necessary to swiftly enact legal instruments on the deployment of the frozen assets.

When discussing the conflict between Israel and Hamas, Poland's chief diplomat said that the EU action must remain focused on the two-state solution. At the same time, the minister emphasised that the achievement of this solution will only be possible if both interested parties show willingness, which is not visible now in the statements and actions of the Israeli authorities.
