Foreign ministers of Poland and Portugal hold consultations

07.02.2024

Chief of Polish diplomacy Radosław Sikorski met today in Warsaw with his Portuguese counterpart João Gomes Cravinho.

Minister Radosław Sikorski welcomed the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal, João Gomes Cravinho

Today's consultations took place immediately after Portugal's top diplomat paid a two-day visit to Ukraine. The ministers expressed their satisfaction with the very good state of Polish-Portuguese relations, especially with the dynamic political dialogue held over the last year, including the successful visit of Portugal's President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to Warsaw. Minister Sikorski appreciated Portugal's support for Ukraine in all dimensions, that is military, economic, and financial ones. Poland’s top diplomat also thanked Minister Cravinho for providing Poland in 2023 with the amount of EUR 30 million, which was then allocated to help Ukrainian refugees in Poland, as well as to buy food rations, fuel, and generators transferred to Ukraine. Minister Sikorski reassured that Poland’s support for Kyiv’s military efforts remains intact.

As part of the consultations, Minister Cravinho referred to his visit to Kyiv and Zhytomyr on 5–6 February this year. He reported that, during his meeting with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, he had spoken about the peace formula, the reconstruction of a school in Zhytomyr, and the integration of Ukrainian refugees' children in Portuguese schools. Minister Cravinho also reported that he had assured the Ukrainian partner that Portugal's assistance for Ukraine will continue for as long as needed and that Ukraine has Portugal's support as it attempts to join the EU and get closer to NATO.

Minister Sikorski said he believes that strengthening the European security must be twofold: on the eastern and on the southern front. Thanking Lisbon for its approach to challenges posed by Russia’s aggressive policy, he pledged that Poland will back Portugal's proposals when it comes to matters that are geographically closest to this country.
