Starting today, the Warsaw Citadel is hosting a two-day informal meeting of European Union foreign ministers in the Gymnich format. On the first day of the talks, the ministers were joined by the UK’s top diplomat, David Lammy.

Although their debate centred around security, Minister Radosław Sikorski said ahead of today’s talks that the participants had much to discuss.

- We are living in interesting times and the Gymnich as you know is informal, it’s an opportunity for ministers to strategize and there is plenty to strategize about - said the chief of Polish diplomacy.

Strengthening EU–UK ties

The majority of the EU member states and the United Kingdom speak with one voice on their continued unwavering support for Ukraine, including on securing a fair and lasting peaceful solution.

The participants agreed that pressure on Russia must be maintained, also through ever-tighter sanctions policy. The ministers stressed that the United Kingdom remains a key partner in ensuring Europe’s security.

The debate highlighted the important role of foreign, security and defence policy cooperation with the United Kingdom, including the conclusion of a Security and Defence Partnership Agreement.

The second day of the meeting in Warsaw will mainly address Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and transatlantic relations.

The informal ministerial gathering in the Gymnich format will be followed by a discussion involving EU candidate countries and aspiring members, held at the invitation of Minister Radosław Sikorski.
