Joint press release by Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland and Romania marking Polish – Romanian Solidarity Day

03.03.2025

Today, 3 March 2025, Poland and Romania celebrate Polish-Romanian Solidarity Day. Established jointly in 2023, the day is both a reminder of the enduring ties that bind the Polish and Romanian peoples together, as well as a strong indicator of the two countries’ continuous interest and desire to further enhance and develop their sound and comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

The date of 3 March was chosen to celebrate the anniversary of the signing of the historic „Convention on Defensive Alliance between the Republic of Poland and the Kingdom of Romania” of 1921, supplemented by the bilateral Guarantee Treaties of 1926 and 1931. The mutual security guarantees were primarily intended to counter unprovoked aggression from the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics.

Even today, Poland and Romania are facing contemporary threats together, just as they did over 100 years ago, largely stemming from beyond our Eastern borders where Russia’s war of aggression waged against neighbouring Ukraine undermines the rules-based international order and fundamental principles enshrined in the UN Charter and International Law. What binds the two countries closely together is the foreign policy focus on security issues and maintaining stability in the region exposed to conventional and hybrid threats, based on a converging perception of the challenges typical of NATO's Eastern flank. We have been NATO members together for 21 years, we have been linked by a bilateral Strategic Partnership for 16 years, and we have been building European security together for 10 years within the framework of the Bucharest Nine format. United in solidarity, our alliance has stood the test of time, proved its resilience and relevance. Sharing a vision of even stronger and meaningful strategic cooperation, Poland and Romania remain committed to the shared values and common interests.

Besides the security component, equally important in building mutual solidarity are the economic, social and educational dimensions of our relations. A rich Polish-Romanian Cultural Season is also underway, which, thanks to numerous events carried out on the territories of both countries, brings our societies closer together by showing not only the richness of their respective cultures, but also our common history.

Celebrating the Polish-Romanian Solidarity Day for the second time, we once again pledge that the strong historical foundations of our bilateral relations will continue to reinforce our friendship and cooperation, for the benefit of the citizens of our countries.
