During today’s inauguration of the Session, Minister Czaputowicz accompanied President Andrzej Duda who represented Poland at the event. President Duda addressed the Assembly focusing on three issues: ensuring world peace, environmental protection and prosperity.

EU foreign ministers gathered for a breakfast discussion in the EU Caucus formula, during which Minister Jacek Czaputowicz expressed his belief that strengthening coordination within the EU brings added value in terms of the UN Security Council’s general activities. “Our country is committed to promoting a close partnership between the UN and the EU throughout its term in the Council,” stressed Minister Czaputowicz. The meeting was attended by the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini as well as present and future EU members of the UN Security Council.

During a high-level meeting on the situation in Syria Minister Czaputowicz stated that the conflict in this country cannot be resolved through military actions. “Any lasting settlement can only be reached through political measures which should be developed according to UN Security Council Resolution 2254 and the Geneva Communiqué,” Minister Czaputowicz stressed. In his opinion the creation of Syria’s Constitutional Committee is an important step to ending the conflict. Minister Czaputowicz also pointed out that from the beginning of the crisis Poland has been present in the Middle East, providing the necessary humanitarian aid to countries hosting the largest number of migrants – victims of conflicts in the region.

Minister Czaputowicz also attended a High-Level Political Forum on the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals.

On the sidelines of the General Assembly Session Minister Czaputowicz held bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Australia, Sudan, Belarus, Bahrain, Tunisia, Laos, and the United Arab Emirates.

They discussed current items on the bilateral and international agenda. In particular, Minister Czaputowicz sought the countries’ support for Poland’s candidacy to the Human Rights Council for 2020-2022 term.
