19.09.2019

Current European Union agenda, security policy, forging closer bilateral political and economic ties, as well as cooperation in regional formats were among the topics discussed by Jacek Czaputowicz and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania Ramona Mănescu. The meeting was held as part of Polish-Romanian intergovernmental consultations in Bucharest.

The visit highlighted the importance of the Polish-Romanian strategic partnership, which the two countries established 10 years ago to strengthen their cooperation. “The second edition of intergovernmental consultations is a proof that we are determined to pursue our bilateral cooperation dialogue at the top political level,” noted Minister Jacek Czaputowicz. The ministers also talked about the activity at the regional cooperation formats, including the Three Seas Initiative, of which both countries are members and where they pursue their common strategic goals. Both sides also expressed their interest in boosting trade.

The meeting in Bucharest was also an opportunity to discuss and coordinate Poland’s and Romania’s positions on EU issues. The diplomats explored the challenges facing the EU, such as Brexit, the Multiannual Financial Framework negotiations, the mobility package and climate policy. Both sides expressed their support for the future EU accession of the Western Balkan countries.

While raising the topic of security policy, Minister Czaputowicz referred to the role of the North Atlantic Alliance in maintaining security in the region and thanked the Romanian side for the support provided by Romanian forces as part of NATO’s eastern flank. The ministers also talked about the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and the decisions which could be made at the upcoming London NATO summit in December this year. The officials also discussed at length the involvement of the two countries in the Warsaw Process.

While in Bucharest, Minister Czaputowicz also opened an exhibition commemorating the heroism of Polish citizens during the Second World War. The exhibition will be on display at the ceremonial hall of the Romanian Senate. “It seems impossible to tell the story of each drama that took place in those tragic times. One thing we can do, however, is to remember,” emphasised the minister. The launch was also attended by President of the Senate of Romania Teodor Meleşcanu.
