“I would like to state Poland’s willingness to settle Sudan’s debt on terms that will be favourable for Sudan and will foster the development of Polish-Sudanese economic and political relations,” said Minister Jacek Czaputowicz during a virtual Sudan Partnership Conference co-hosted by Germany, Sudan, the European Union, and the United Nations.
“Poland fully understands Sudan’s current situation. Thirty years ago, we also faced the task of implementing political transition and building a democratic system and free market economy,” stressed Minister Czaputowicz. He also recalled a longstanding and fruitful cooperation in the area of protecting Sudan’s cultural heritage and the experiences of the Polish presidency of the Sudan Sanctions Committee when Poland was a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2018-2019. They allowed us to better understand the scale of the challenges facing the new Sudanese authorities.
The chief of Polish diplomacy confirmed Poland’s support for reforms that the Sudanese authorities have launched to improve the situation in the country. He also welcomed the involvement of the international community, in particular the Friends of Sudan Group, which contributed significantly to organising today’s conference.
The Sudan Partnership Conference provided political endorsement of the international community for the process of Sudan’s economic and political transition that started in spring 2019 after Omar al-Bashir’s regime was overthrown. It also aimed at securing funds to support reforms that the Sudanese authorities have launched and reducing Sudan’s foreign debt burden, whose present scale hinders obtaining funds for investments which are indispensable for the country’s development.
The conference brought together representatives of countries and international organisations, including Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, as well as the heads of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
