03.02.2020

“The Treaty of Tartu was the crowning point of a long path to Estonia’s sovereignty won at the cost of enormous sacrifice by its people,” said Minister Jacek Czaputowicz in Tartu, Estonia, where, together with the foreign ministers of Estonia, Finland, and Latvia, he attended celebrations marking the centenary of the Treaty of Tartu.

The treaty put an end to the war for Estonia’s independence and is regarded as one of the foundations of its statehood.

“Poland and Estonia are friends and loyal allies. We share similar values and positions, and our cooperation in the EU, NATO, and the UN helps solve problems worldwide,” said Minister Czaputowicz in his address. He stressed that Poland was one of the first countries to recognise Estonia’s independence, on 31 December 1920. “Between 2020 and 2021 we will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations. I am convinced that the joint celebrations will further strengthen our very good relations,” added the head of the Polish MFA.

On the occasion of the ceremony in Tartu, Minister Czaputowicz also met with the chief of Estonian diplomacy, Urmas Reinsalu. The ministers discussed bilateral relations and cooperation between the two countries in regional and international fora, including Estonia’s planned activities as a non-permanent member of the UNSC, the US peace plan proposal for the Middle East, and the further development of the Three Seas Initiative. “We hope that the Three Seas Initiative summit in Tallinn will make for a better understanding and attractiveness of this initiative,” remarked the Polish foreign minister. Also raised was history policy in the context of the May celebrations of the end of World War II.

The centenary celebration of the signing of the Treaty of Tartu also came as an opportunity for talks involving the chiefs of Finnish and Latvian diplomacy, Pekka Haavisto and Edgars Rinkēvičs. The ministers discussed European issues, including the state of play of Multiannual Financial Framework negotiations and the EU’s enlargement, as well as security and the transatlantic relationship.

While in Estonia, Minister Czaputowicz paid a visit to the Ämari air base, where the Polish Military Contingent “Orlik” is stationed. Since this January, it has been part of NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission. It is the ninth time that Polish pilots have taken part in policing the airspace over Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia.
