15.01.2020

“Migration management system in Europe should be based on secure EU external borders, cooperation with third countries, effective returns and preventing secondary movements,” said Minister Konrad Szymański during a meeting with Minister for European Affairs of Greece Miltiadis Varvitsiotis.

Minister Szymański emphasised that Poland stands ready to continue to build a system to manage migration and asylum. “Poland cannot agree to any form of compulsory relocation of immigrants,” added the minister.

The officials also discussed the Multiannual Financial Framework, climate change and Brexit. “Our countries agree that the next MFF must be ambitious, allocate sufficient budget for cohesion policy and the Common Agricultural Policy. Therefore, during the final negotiation stages we should continue to cooperate in the current format of Friends of Cohesion,” stressed Minister Szymański. He further noted that the European Commission’s proposals in this area should meet the needs of the less developed regions and countries of the EU.

On the topic of climate policy, Minister Szymański highlighted Poland’s particular situation, which affects its ability to achieve climate neutrality. “Poland pledges to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by the deadline set out in the Paris Agreement at a pace reflecting its internal conditions and in line with the provisions of the European Council’s conclusions of December 2019,” he noted.

The ministers also discussed the enlargement of the European Union. “Poland is a firm supporter of the EU’s open door policy and we are keen to discuss facilitating the accession process. However, the objective of this process has to remain the same, that is that new members should join the Community after they meet all necessary conditions,” pointed out Minister Szymański.
