07.03.2024

During his meeting with the diplomats, Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stressed that the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean are natural partners for one another, with strong historical and cultural ties, social and economic links, and a shared commitment to peace and multilateralism.

Minister Sikorski presented Poland’s position on current developments worldwide, in particular with regard to unprovoked Russian aggression against Ukraine and the need to oppose Russian disinformation. Poland’s top diplomat noted that the ongoing war poses a threat to global security and stability, while its negative effects, such as rising food and energy prices, have also affected Latin American countries.

Minister Sikorski expressed his hope for a further strengthening of inter-regional relations and underlined the satisfaction with the last summit in Brussels of heads of state and government of the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean in July 2023. He recalled that the next top-level meeting is scheduled to take place in Bogota in 2025 and will probably fall during the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU. Therefore, this will be an excellent opportunity for Poland to enhance its presence in Latin America.

In Minister Sikorski’s view, it is necessary to deepen Poland’s relations with Latin America and the Caribbean, diversify economic and investment cooperation, and enhance coordination in international fora. The large Polish community living in the region will definitely be an additional asset in this context.

Mexican Ambassador Juan Sandoval Mendiolea spoke on behalf of the visitors, offering reassurance of the will to further political cooperation, including in international fora, deepen economic relations, and intensify contacts in the fields of culture and tourism.  The diplomats present at the meeting called for Poland’s enhanced presence in the bilateral format as well as within the European Union.
