During the videoconference, the ministers discussed the conclusion of the Resolute Support Mission and the process of the allied forces’ withdrawal, beginning from 1 May this year. The videoconference’s participants also affirmed their willingness to continue coordinated actions in this area. The Allies issued a joint statement on Afghanistan.

The NATO ministers also discussed the Russian army’s build-up on Ukraine’s borders, a step which increases tensions in the entire region. They also pointed to Russia’s other aggressive hybrid activities.

“Russia’s destabilising activities are now the biggest challenge to European security,” stressed Minister Rau in his address. The head of the Polish MFA expressed his concern over Russia’s lack of constructive response to the diplomatic de-escalation initiatives, including those undertaken within the framework of the OSCE’s Vienna Document. Minister Rau informed the Allies about the course of his last visit to Kyiv on 8 April 2021. He also drew attention to the need for taking concrete measures to support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
