Minister Zbigniew Rau meets with the Spanish head of diplomacy

04.02.2021

“The Kingdom of Spain is one of key European partners for Poland. Our regular political dialogue is especially important in the context of new challenges faced by the European Union and NATO. I am very pleased that, despite the epidemic, Minister Arancha González Laya could come to Warsaw,” said Minister Zbigniew Rau greeting the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Coordination.

The main topics of the talks were the state of bilateral relations and the prospects for their development in the nearest future, particularly, within the upcoming parliamentary forum, and intergovernmental consultations. In both countries, such consultations are hold only with strategic partners, which proves the special character of relations between Poland and Spain.

Both foreign ministers agreed that it is necessary to tighten multilateral cooperation between Warsaw and Madrid, also in the context of European and international agenda. Our positions coincide in many respects, despite, at some points, a different shift of emphasis, which is a natural result of geographical, political, and economic circumstances.

The top diplomats also focused on the future of the EU-UK relations, Eastern policy, transatlantic relations after the new US president assumed the office, cooperation with China, as well as cooperation with the Eastern Partnership and Southern Neighbourhood countries. While discussing the matter of international security, the foreign ministers expressed their hope that NATO’s political dimension would be enhanced at the June summit upon the decisions of the Alliance heads of states. Minister Rau welcomed Spanish active engagement in the NATO’s eastern flank. Last but not least, the interlocutors exchanged their views on the possible strengthening of cooperation within the OSCE.
