Minister Zbigniew Rau starts his visit to India

25.04.2022

During today’s meeting with India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, the head of Polish diplomacy emphasised that India is one of Poland’s key economic partners in Asia. Minister Rau expressed his hope that restoring bilateral trade, particularly exports from Poland, after the COVID-19 pandemic will be of lasting nature.

Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau visits India

“My presence in New Delhi is evidence of Poland’s active engagement in maintaining good Polish-Indian bilateral relations built on the willingness to promote freedom, democracy and international order based on the rule of law. This is particularly important in the light of current challenges to regional and global security across our eastern border,” said Minister Rau during the first day of his visit to India.

The official talks between Poland’s and India’s top diplomats also provided an opportunity to discuss key issues in bilateral cooperation and to exchange views on the current regional and global problems, in particular Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine. The head of the Polish MFA presented Poland’s position as the OSCE chair on the security situation in Eastern Europe.

Minister Rau reaffirmed the commitment to maintain the robust dynamics of political relations with India as one of key Asian countries that currently is a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2022, and in 2023 is to head the G20. Another equally important issue discussed with the Indian side was the broadly understood economic cooperation in the mining sector as well as the pharmaceutical and defence industries, and in promoting Polish exports.

The culminating point of the ministerial talks was the signing of a bilateral agreement on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters.
