Poland assists the Holy See with the fight against the pandemic

08.05.2020

Transport with material assistance of personal protective equipment has reached the Vatican today. The aid organised jointly by the Polish government and the PKN Orlen company, will be handed over to the Secretariat of State of the Holy See.

Polska wspiera Watykan w walce z pandemią

As part of the supplies, protective masks, Brubeck masks, disinfectants, and protective clothing were donated. The material aid for the Holy See is another sign of Polish international solidarity in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. To date, Poland has supported, among others, Italy, Spain, and Belarus.

The assistance initiative was mentioned by President Andrzej Duda in a phone conversation with the Holy Father Francis. The Pope expressed his gratitude for the action to fight the pandemic and called it an example of “the Polish spirit”. The gifts will be transferred directly for further distribution to Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, the Almoner of His Holiness who runs papal charitable activities.

Through the Secretariat of State of the Holy See, the support from the Polish government and PKN Orlen will reach the Gendarmerie Corps of the Vatican City and the Pontifical Swiss Guard, the units which, due to their everyday service, are most at risk of contracting the virus. The Vatican Gendarmerie cooperated with Poland in the past to organise the International Youth Days, whereas the Swiss Guards provide personal protection to Pope Francis on everyday basis.

Most of all, the material support will be given to those
in need in Italy who are under the care of the Apostolic Almoner, including the poor, homeless, migrants, or patients of care homes. A part of the donation will also support the needy
of the Polish Church of Saint Stanislaus in Rome.

The initiative reflects friendly relations between the Republic of Poland and the Holy See, as well as joint actions carried out by the two states to assist the most vulnerable.
