Polish-Indian political consultations at deputy foreign ministers’ level
10.08.2020
“The crisis provoked by COVID-19 has shown that Poland and India maintain a close bilateral relationship based on mutual respect and commitment to freedom and democracy. I would like to stress that the recent months have also proved that our countries can count on each other in times of particularly difficult challenges,” Deputy Minister Marcin Przydacz said at a video conference with India’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Secretary (West) Vikas Swarup.
Undersecretary of State Marcin Przydacz with his Indian counterpart focused on Poland-India bilateral relations and cooperation in international organisations, including in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as selected regional and global issues. Deputy Minister Przydacz thanked his interlocutor for a very good cooperation and assistance of the Indian Foreign Ministry in repatriating more than 600 Polish citizens from India. He also praised the Ministry’s support in unblocking India’s export of products of strategic importance for public health during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The ministers talked about the state of political and economic relations, including the prospects for developing cooperation in the areas of trade and investment, research and technology, defence, education and others. They also reviewed the treaty base and efforts carried out to expand it. The most important topics concerning EU-India cooperation were discussed, also in the context of the EU-India summit held via video conference in mid-July this year.
The agenda of the consultations also included cooperation of both countries in multilateral forums and exchange of supports for candidates to international organizations. Deputy Minister Marcin Przydacz congratulated his counterpart on the election of India to the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member for the 2021-2022 term, and expressed his confidence that India will make a significant contribution to the Council’s work.
Another important topic of the talks was the epidemiological and economic situation in Asia and Europe, as well as ways to counteract the effects of the pandemic. The ministers exchanged views on the broader global situation and both countries’ relations with their key partners.
