Polish-Iranian political consultations

19.07.2023

On 19 July in Warsaw, Undersecretary of State at the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs Paweł Jabłoński held consultations with Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ali Bagheri Kani.

Political consultations between Poland and Iran

The Polish-Iranian talks, held regularly at the level of deputy foreign ministers, provided an opportunity to discuss key issues in bilateral cooperation and share views on regional developments, global problems, including human rights, and security matters.

During the meeting, of which the Polish side had informed its allies, the officials discussed the current situation in the region. Russia's aggression against Ukraine was also high on the agenda. In this context, Deputy Minister Jabłoński pointed out that Russia’s attack against Ukraine violates international law and that Russia has been committing crimes, including crimes against civilian populations. He also noted that the consequences of the Russian invasion have been felt not only in Ukraine and European countries, but worldwide. This is evidenced particularly by the deteriorating level of global food and energy security. Deputy Minister Jabłoński also stressed that any steps taken to lend support to Russia, especially by providing it with weapons or military equipment, as well as supporting Belarus’s activities, are unacceptable.

Another important topic raised during the Polish-Iranian talks was the issue of negotiations to resume the nuclear deal (JCPOA). Poland stresses the need to limit Iran’s further activities under the nuclear programme which poses the risk of proliferating weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East.
