The deputy head of Polish diplomacy Marcin Przydacz and Secretary of State for Foreign and Global Affairs Angeles Moreno Bau.

The deputy head of Polish diplomacy held consultations on security policy with Spanish MFA Secretary of State for Foreign and Global Affairs Angeles Moreno Bau.

“Putin miscalculated his odds of winning the war and underestimated Western unity in response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine,” said the Polish undersecretary of state. He also reiterated Ukraine’s call for further military support. The Polish official stressed the urgency of increased aid to Kyiv, despite the fact that its cost will affect all of us. “Poland, the leader in supporting Ukraine, calls on others to increase their efforts,” he added.

Secretary of State Moreno Bau shared Poland’s view of the matter. She agreed with her Polish counterpart on the need to impose further sanctions on Russia. The hosts thanked Poland and Poles for welcoming refugees from Ukraine and agreed that the European Union should earmark new funds for their maintenance.

Both parties underlined the importance of transatlantic relations, also highly appreciating the activities to date of NATO and the EU. In this context, Deputy Minister Przydacz noted that Russia poses a threat to Europe’s stability and security. The interlocutors agreed that the restoration of status quo ante is not possible.

As regards the NATO summit in Madrid, the deputy ministers discussed the New Strategic Concept. In their common view, NATO’s presence on its eastern flank must be enhanced before the meeting of heads of state and government in June. The officials also highlighted the need to diversify energy supplies and to ensure global energy security.

Deputy Minister Przydacz also met with Director of Elcano Royal Institute Charles Powell, with whom he discussed international security situation.
