On 4-5 October, MFA's Undersecretary of State Wojciech Zajączkowski travelled to the Dominican Republic, where he held the first round of Polish-Dominican political consultations. Deputy Minister Zajączkowski signed a memorandum with the head of the Dominican diplomacy establishing a mechanism of regular political consultations between the two countries.
During the two-day visit, Deputy Minister Wojciech Zajączkowski met with senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic. The deputy head of the Polish diplomacy and Minister of Foreign Affairs Víctor Bisonó Haza signed an agreement which provides a framework for dialogue between the foreign ministries of the two countries. During the political consultations the Dominican side was represented by Deputy Minister Francisco Alberto Caraballo. The diplomats reviewed bilateral relations and discussed the progress in the negotiations on the air transport agreement.
The Polish side proposed to launch negotiations on agreements concerning extradition and legal assistance in criminal matters. The consultations also covered cooperation in geology, digitisation of public services, and green technologies.
Another important item on the agenda was cooperation in multilateral fora. Deputy Minister Zajączkowski presented the idea of the Dominican Republic joining the Energy Security and Strategic Autonomy Alliance (ESSA) during the COP31 conference.
The officials exchanged views on the situation in their regions, including the relations with neighbouring countries—the Dominican Republic’s with Haiti and Poland’s with Belarus.
The deputy head of the Polish MFA also met with Deputy Minister for Economic Affairs and International Cooperation Vilma Arbaje. The talks focused on prospects for closer economic cooperation, in particular in agriculture and digitisation.
Deputy Minister Wojciech Zajączkowski also visited the Institute of Higher Education in Diplomatic and Consular Training of the Dominican MFA, where he delivered a lecture on Polish policy towards Latin America. Next, the deputy MFA head presented honorary consuls with decorations—awarding Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland to Gustavo Vega, Poland’s honorary consul in Santo Domingo, and the Decoration of Honour for Services to the Polish Diaspora and Poles Abroad to Marek Piwowarski, honorary consul general in Puerto Plata.
