Secretary General of European External Action Service visits Warsaw

Stefano Sannino, Secretary General of the European External Action Service, paid a visit to Warsaw at the invitation of Minister Arkady Rzegocki, Head of the Foreign Service at the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The talks centred on promoting employment of Poles in the European External Action Service, cooperation on the European Diplomatic Academy, a new EEAS project, and current challenges and priorities of the Common Foreign and Security Policy.

During the meeting with the EEAS Secretary General, the Head of the Foreign Service Arkady Rzegocki emphasized the importance which the Ministry attaches to measures to increase the employment of Polish citizens, including diplomats, in the European External Action Service. Minister Rzegocki also declared that the Polish side is interested in the idea of establishing the European Diplomatic Academy, which is to provide practical training for young diplomats from EU member states in the field of EU diplomacy, policy development and implementation of priorities of the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union.

The visit’s programme included political consultations held with the MFA Political Director on regional security, the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border and in Ukraine, as well as the current developments concerning the EU’s Strategic Compass.

While in Warsaw, EEAS Secretary General Stefano Sannino also met with Minister for European Affairs Konrad Szymański. The main topic of the meeting was the response of the European Union and the United States to Russia’s actions. Also discussed were the prospects for the EU’s security policy and the situation in its immediate neighbourhood, also in the context of European climate and energy diplomacy.

Finally, the Secretary General had the opportunity to meet with students of the College of Europe in Natolin as well as the MFA’s diplomatic and consular training graduates and diplomats during a hybrid lecture on the Common Security and Defence Policy, organized by the College in cooperation with the MFA Diplomatic Academy.
