Statement by the MFA of Poland on Parliamentary Elections in Georgia (October 31st, 2020)

02.11.2020

Polish MFA appreciates the efforts of the Georgia’s authorities to organise the parliamentary elections on October 31st in a swift and efficient manner, based on a revised electoral system. The turnout achieved, especially within a framework of difficulties posed by the pandemic situation, is a success of the Georgian civil society.

We share the assessment of international organisations (OSCE/ODIHR, European Union, Parliamentary Assemblies of OSCE, Council of Europe and NATO) that the elections were competitive and, overall, fundamental freedoms and international standards were respected.

However, we draw attention to worrying reports on irregularities and violations (allegedly exceeding in numbers those registered during 2016 elections). We call on Georgian authorities to investigate all the complaints, with due scrutiny and with proper respect to institutional process, as well as according to prevailing procedures. That would enhance transparency and trust in electoral process, especially before the second round scheduled on November 21st.

Poland invariably expresses its constant support for the territorial integrity of Georgia within internationally recognized borders as well as for its Euro-Atlantic aspirations.
