Statement on the escalation of violence in the West Bank

22.02.2023

Poland expresses its deep concern over continuing high level of violence in the West Bank, resulting in a very high number of casualties over the past year and months.

MFA STATEMENT

In this context, we follow with concern the news on the operation by Israeli security forces in Nablus, which left at least 10 people dead, 97 injured and over 200 affected by the use of tear gas.

In the spirit of the 20 February 2023 UN Security Council Presidential Statement, we urge to refrain from any unilateral actions that impede dialogue and for an immediate de-escalation and restoration of calm. We emphasize that according to the international humanitarian law, lethal force should be used proportionately and only as a last resort, and that civilians should always be protected. Disproportionate use of violence by security forces, leading to civilian casualties, is unacceptable.
