They discussed security, especially in the context of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, and stressed that it is necessary to strengthen not only bilateral relations and relations at the EU level, but also within NATO.

During the talks, Deputy Prime Minister Sikorski noted the importance of Portugal’s support for the combatant Ukraine including humanitarian aid, military support for Ukraine’s government and army, as well as providing shelter to Ukrainian war refugees in Portugal. The head of the Polish diplomacy said that Portugal’s prime minister’s first visit to Kyiv will be a major sign of support for Ukraine.

The two ministers emphasised that transatlantic ties and a united NATO are beneficial for all partners, both European and North American. They also discussed relations with Latin America, a region which is very important for the European Union due to its economic and demographic potential.

Foreign ministers of Poland and Portugal highlighted that the two countries pursue intensive economic cooperation. The previous year was a record one in terms of turnover, which topped EUR 3.1 billion.

Deputy Prime Minister Sikorski recalled that Poland is currently among the top ten largest suppliers of goods to Portugal.

“We perceive Portugal as a stable trade partner and see the potential for the further growth of our collaboration. (...) Polish IT and renewable energy sources companies, as well as those operating in the medical, chemical, cosmetic, logistic, and even yacht-building sectors, are increasingly active in the Portuguese market”

- Poland’s foreign minister said to the media after meeting his Portuguese counterpart.

The memorandum signed today by representatives of Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego and its Portuguese counterpart, Banco Português de Fomento, is expected to stimulate the deepening of economic cooperation. The foreign ministers of Poland and Portugal attended its signing ceremony. The document includes both banks’ declarations of interest in cooperation and joint funding of investments in infrastructure, climate protection, and innovations. The memorandum also provides for exchange of expertise, market analyses, and investment strategies. This will benefit Polish entrepreneurs, who will gain easier access to the Portuguese market.
