23.01.2021

On 22 January 2021, Deputy Foreign Minister Paweł Jabłoński took part in a teleconference with US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry, attended by representatives of foreign ministries of the EU member states, as well as Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell.

The participants discussed challenges facing climate diplomacy ahead of the COP26 in Glasgow and actions for the global just energy transition. It was the first meeting of representatives of the European Union with a representative of the new US administration.

In his speech, Deputy Minister Jabłoński stressed that the US return to the Paris Agreement strengthens transatlantic cooperation. He also pointed out the great importance of international cooperation in preventing climate change and in striving for just energy transition. Poland supports ambitious climate objectives, underlining that they must be implemented in such a way that developing countries are not excessively burdened with their costs. Poland contributes to the EU-US cooperation in this field by taking measures to strengthen modern and low-carbon energy sources, both within the EU and the Three Seas Initiative. One of such prospective areas inducing emission reduction is cooperation in the use of hydrogen, as well as increasing energy efficiency and thus reducing harmful emissions.
