Visit of the Deputy Minister Paweł Jabłoński in the United Republic of Tanzania

Dynamically developing bilateral relations, and the prospect of intensifying them even further both in terms of politics and economy, were the main topics discussed during the three-day visit of the Deputy Minister Paweł Jabłoński in the United Republic of Tanzania.

Mr. Jabłoński emphasised during the meeting with his Tanzanian counterpart, the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Mbarouk Nassor Mbarouk, that “Poland perceives Tanzania as a key partner in Africa, one of the four priority states in sub-Saharan Africa as part of development cooperation activities, with which we wish to further strengthen our relations, especially in the area of economy”.

Apart from the talks held at the Tanzanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Jabłoński also had meetings at ministries responsible for the essential areas in the cooperation between Poland and Tanzania.

The meeting with the Minister for Education, Science, Technology and Schooling, also attended by representatives of Polish higher education institutions and non-governmental organizations, was dedicated to training the personnel needed for the development of the leading sectors of Tanzanian economy. including the cooperation of education institutions in the area of agriculture. A significant element of this cooperation can become the intensification of student exchange from both countries and increasing the number of available scholarships. These issues were also discussed during the meeting of Deputy Minister Mr. Jabłoński and Mr. Bertram Mapunda, Principal of the Jordan University College, a higher education institution supported under the Polish Aid assistance programme, and with Polish missionaries who collaborate with the College.

The talks with the Minister for Finance and Planning Mwigulu Nchemba, Minister for Industry and Trade, Prof. Kitila Mkumbo, and Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Hussein Bashe, pertained to the prospects and economic conditions of cooperation in terms of investment opportunities for Polish enterprises in Tanzania. There is an interest among Polish enterprises which offer modern technologies, e.g., in the area of ICT, fintech, water and sanitary, and mineral mining and processing infrastructure, as well as environment protection. The economic agenda served as the basis to discuss the past experience of Polish enterprises which perform contracts on the basis of government loans within tied aid.

In the course of the visit, the Deputy Head of Polish Diplomacy also met with the Deputy Minister for Water Resources, Maryprisca Winfried Mahundi, with whom he executed an agreement to determine the scope of works for the Polish and Tanzanian project of modernising the water supply system and efficient administration of water resources in Dar Es Salaam, the largest city in Tanzania, and in Dodoma, the capital city of Tanzania, which also comprises improving the personnel of local institutions. The project will be carried out with the involvement of Polish enterprises from the ICT and water sectors, as well as higher education institutions.

Mr. Jabłoński also visited the Livestock Training Institute (LITA) in Tengeru, which has been supported by Poland for over ten years now by increasing the competences of the personnel who train animal health protection specialists, improving infrastructural facilities and providing additional modern laboratory equipment. The Deputy Minister also headed to APOPO in Morogoro, the centre dealing with diagnostics and detection of tuberculosis infections by southern giant pouched rats. Thanks to Polish Aid, the tuberculosis detection programme in Tanzania was extended to include further clinics located in the area of Dodoma and Morogoro.

The Deputy Head of Polish Diplomacy also visited the Polish cemetery in Tengeru (the biggest Polish cemetery in Tanzania for civilian exiles accompanying General Anders’s army), he met with the Polish community and missionaries working in Tanzania.

Mr. Jabłoński was accompanied by an economic mission of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, comprising representatives of Polish enterprises interested in entering the Tanzanian market
