Better together. Family Rights Day

22.10.2023

The family is the strength and safe space where we take our first steps, and which prepares us for life in society. This is the highest value for the vast majority of Poles. Family Rights Day, celebrated on 22 October, is an excellent opportunity to remind ourselves of the important role that the family plays, not only individually, but also from the perspective of the entire community.

Better together. Family Rights Day

Family Rights Day was established by the Polish Parliament (Sejm) in 2016. 22 October is not a coincidence – this is the day on which, in 1983, on the fifth anniversary of the inauguration of John Paul II's pontificate, the Holy See proclaimed the 'Charter of the Rights of the Family'.

The family is our highest good, it is the most important thing for each of us. First, parents, siblings, grandparents – it is our whole world. Then, as we grow up, become adults, this circle expands, we soon start our own families, we get to know the other side of the coin. Let me remind you that it was we who added the member 'Family' to the name of the ministry I lead. This was not only a symbolic change, but a change that set the direction of our activities during the next few years. It is the duty of those in power to care for the welfare of families, stresses Marlena Maląg, Minister of Family and Social Policy.

A secure future for our children

The Family 500+ programme, which will soon change to 800+, Good Start, Family Care Capital, nursery care subsidies, increased investment in the creation of new childcare places for the youngest children under the Maluch+ programme – these are just some of the measures implemented in recent years to benefit families with children.

As of 2016, this is nearly PLN 258 billion. It is an investment into our children's future, into their safe development, into equal educational opportunities – into a peaceful tomorrow. It is a concrete support at the next stages of a child's life and development, tailored to the needs of parents and families, points out Minister Marlena Maląg.

Peaceful autumn of life

The family is also the older generation, which deserves a peaceful autumn of life. It is the 13th and 14th pensions, the valorisation of benefits, the Mama 4+ programme, but also programmes to activate older people across the country – Senior+ and Active+. And not only this.

As the head of the family ministry points out, data from the Ministry of Family and Social Policy shows that a total of around PLN 196.55 billion has been allocated for the valorisation and payment of the 13th and 14th pensions between 2019 and 2023.

Concern for the safety of the elderly, including financial ones, is a duty of the state. It is also the embodiment of the idea of intergenerational and social solidarity, an expression of respect and gratitude, points out Family Minister Marlena Maląg.

And she adds 'A safe family – from the youngest to the oldest members – is our common good and our future'.
