Global Disability Summit

17.02.2022

The Deputy Minister of Family and Social Policy, Government Plenipotentiary for Disabled People, Paweł Wdówik attended the online Global Disability Summit, organised by the governments of Norway, Ghana and the International Disability Alliance.

Global Disability Summit

The first such event was held in London in 2018. This year’s Summit refers to the results achieved so far and focuses on accelerating progress in exercising the rights of persons with disabilities all over the world.

Mobilisation of efforts is necessary

The participants called for mobilising efforts to implement the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the “Leave No One Behind” principle and a fuller social inclusion of persons with disabilities in relation to the pandemic situation currently facing the world.

The Summit is also an opportunity to indicate specific political commitments that will bring real change to persons with disabilities, remove inequalities and strengthen social and professional integration.

We implement the “Convention” and increase financial inputs

Deputy Minister Paweł Wdówik pointed out that Poland has recently been undertaking strategic, programme and legislative actions focused on the more complete implementation of the provisions of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities into the Polish legislation.

- Expenditures on support for persons with disabilities in our country are constantly growing: from about USD 4 billion in 2015 to about USD 8 billion in 2021 – said Deputy Minister Wdówik. He stressed that in 2021 the Polish Government adopted the first Polish “Strategy for Persons with Disabilities for the years 2021-2030”. It considers the demands of persons with disabilities and assumes a comprehensive, horizontal and cross-sectoral approach to supporting persons with disabilities.

Poland seeks to guarantee the exercise of the right to independent living for persons with disabilities and to ensure full architectural, transport and information and communication accessibility.
