The 'Working Holiday' Programme – Japan

On 11 July 2015, the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Poland and the Government of Japan on the 'Working Holiday' Programme, signed in Tokyo on 27 February 2015, entered into force. Visa applications can be submitted to the Embassy of Japan in Warsaw.

Benefits of participating in the Programme

The Working Holiday Programme is aimed at young people (aged 18 to 30 inclusive) and allows them to travel to Japan for up to one year, combining a holiday stay, which allows them to learn about Japanese culture and lifestyle, with the opportunity to take up paid work, which is additional to the main tourist and cultural purpose of the stay.

Conditions for participation in the Programme

Polish citizens who meet the following conditions may apply to participate in the Programme:

  • their main purpose for participating in the Programme is to spend their holiday in Japan;
  • on the date of submitting their application, they are between eighteen (18) and thirty (30) years of age;
  • they are not accompanied by dependents;
  • they have a valid passport and a return ticket, or sufficient funds to purchase one;
  • they have sufficient funds to support themselves during the initial period of their stay under the Programme; and
  • they meet the health requirements specified in Japanese law and have purchased health insurance covering hospital care.

The annual limit for visas for participation in the Japan ‘Working Holiday’ Programme is currently 500 (five hundred) visas.

Visa procedures for citizens of the Republic of Poland

Documents required to submit a visa application:

  • valid passport (valid for at least 1 year)
  • visa application form with a current passport photo (4.5 x 3.5 cm, taken within the last 6 months)
  • written explanation of the reason for applying for a ‘Working Holiday’ visa (1 A4 page, free form)
  • purchased return flight ticket or reservation confirmed by a travel agency/airline
  • bank statement for the last 3 months
  • commitment to join the National Health Insurance
  • curriculum vitae
  • brief outline of the stay
  • travel insurance (if purchased in advance)

Applicants may be asked to submit additional documents or will be invited for an interview. Visa applications are accepted based on prior notification. The Embassy requests applicants to make appointments by email, sending their application to the Consulate of the Embassy of Japan: cons@wr.mofa.go.jp.
