Get a PESEL ID - a service for foreigners

If you are a foreigner living in Poland, you can register your residence. You will then automatically be assigned a PESEL id. If you are unable to register and if an office requires your PESEL id, submit an application. See how to do it.

Informacje:

    • You will obtain the PESEL Number ex officio – if you register your residence in Poland for a stay of over 30 days.
    • Submit an application with any municipality/township office – if you cannot register your residence, but you need the PESEL Number.
  • If you are unable to register your residence:

    Remember to sign the application by hand.

    If you are not:

    • a citizen of a European Union Member State
    • a citizen of a member state of the European Free Trade Agreement (EFTA) - being a party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area,
    • a citizen of the Swiss Confederation or a member of such citizens’ family, a citizen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, as referred to in Article 10 par. 1, letter b or d of the Agreement on the withdrawal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from the European Union and the European Atomic Energy Community (EU OJ  L29 of 31 January 2020, p. 7, as amended. 12), or a member of such citizen’s family, referred to in Art. 10 par. 1 letter e or f of this agreement
    • you must submit the application for a PESEL id in person at any municipal office. This does not apply to children born in the territory of the Republic of Poland.

    Remember! In the application, please specify the legal basis for the obligation to have a PESEL id assigned. If an office (e.g. ZUS or tax office) requires you to provide your PESEL id, it should also provide you with the legal basis.

    If there are any omissions in the application, you will receive a message to fix them. Office may not process your application, if the application does not meet the official requirements.

  • This is a free of charge service.
     

  • The official will immediately accept your application. If there are grounds for assigning the PESEL no. – you will receive notice of assignment of the PESEL Number.

  • at the municipality/township office where you applied

    • The Population Registration Act of 25 September 2010 (Journal of Laws of  2021 r. Item 510),
    • Regulation of the Minister of Internal Affairs of 4 January 2012 regarding the assignment or change of PESEL N Numbers (Journal of Laws of 2015 r. Item 1984).
