On Thursday (31 March), Minister Mariusz Kamiński met with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba visiting Warsaw. "I would like to thank the Head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry for today's meeting and the constructive talks. I assured him of the support Poland and Polish society gives to refugees from Ukraine," said Minister Mariusz Kamiński.

On Thursday (31 March), Minister Mariusz Kaminski met with Filippo Grandi, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The meeting was also attended by Deputy Ministers Paweł Szefernaker and Bartosz Grodecki. The High Commissioner expressed his gratitude to the Government of the Republic of Poland for efforts to receive and support refugees from Ukraine.

Today (31 March), Deputy Ministers Pawel Szefernaker and Bartosz Grodecki met at the Ministry of the Interior and Administration with Anna Clunes, the British Ambassador to Poland. The subject of the talks was, among others, helping refugees from Ukraine and strengthening the Polish-British partnership in the field of security. It was another meeting with the British side on this issue.

"We talk with many circles, local government officials and voivodes. These discussions and consultations with the committee led to the fact that we decided to create together a short draft amendment to the law. It will ensure that all Ukrainians, regardless of which border they crossed, will be bound by the provisions of the special act," said the Deputy Head of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration in the Sejm.

"The process of assigning PESEL numbers to refugees started today. Within two weeks, we passed a law providing a legal basis for the functioning of the system," said Deputy Minister Paweł Szefernaker during a press conference (16 March) at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister. "We have information that at 3 p.m., 17 thousand PESEL numbers for adults and almost 15 thousand for children were issued. On average, during a typical working day, about 16 thousand numbers are issued at the office," informed Janusz Cieszyński, Government Plenipotentiary for Cyber Security.

Tomorrow (16 March), assigning PESEL numbers to Ukrainian citizens who fled the war will launch. “ We appeal to Ukrainian citizens not to rush to the offices on the first day. The Ambassador of Ukraine to Poland, Mr Andriy Deshchytsya, called for the same. The date of application will not affect the provision of support. Regardless of when the citizens of Ukraine go to the office, they are guaranteed legal protection from the day they arrive in Poland ,“ said Deputy Minister Paweł Szefernaker. The joint mass point organised by the Government and the Warsaw local government will start on Saturday at the National Stadium.

The implementation of the Act on assistance for Ukrainian citizens in connection with the armed conflict on the territory of that country, the provision of free transport for refugees and the beginning of the process of assigning PESEL numbers to Ukrainian citizens were the main topics of today's (14 March) press conference. Deputy Ministers Maciej Wąsik and Paweł Szefernaker presented details concerning assistance for people fleeing war in Ukraine.

On Saturday (12 March), President Andrzej Duda signed the Act on assistance to citizens of Ukraine in connection with armed conflict on the territory of that country. The new solutions will enter into force, as a rule, on the day of their publication in the Journal of Laws and will apply retroactively from 24 February 2022.

"The registration of refugees from Ukraine who want to obtain a PESEL number and stay in Poland will start next Wednesday, 16 March," said Deputy Minister Paweł Szefernaker during a press conference (12 March) at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister. It was also attended by Piotr Müller, Government Spokesman, Janusz Cieszyński, Government Plenipotentiary for Cyber Security, and Paweł Jabłoński, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

There are already 36 reception points in Poland, and offices are preparing to assign PESEL numbers to Ukrainian citizens. An informal international staff of assistance for refugees from Ukraine has also started functioning. On Friday (11 March), Minister Mariusz Kamiński and Deputy Minister Paweł Szefernaker informed at a press conference about the details of assistance for people fleeing the war in Ukraine.
